No school at Humes as it awaits lead tests

Humes Middle School will be closed Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday while school officials await test results for lead-based paint.

School leaders called out inspectors Tuesday to look at mold, but those inspectors were much more concerned about peeling and chipping paint.

Preliminary tests Thursday showed some lead content, so Pickering Environmental Consultants Inc. advised Supt. Johnnie B. Watson to cancel classes while waiting for more test results, due back Wednesday.

By late Friday, school leaders were unsure whether they'd try to find space at nearby schools for Humes kids or have them make up the days later.

It's not unusual to find lead-based paint in old schools like Humes, built in 1927 with six additions since.

And it's all right to have that paint if it's in good condition - not chipping, peeling and cracking. That's when the lead can break into dust and build up in the body, damaging the brain, kidneys and nervous system.

Inspectors are also testing for mold spore counts and types but say mold had nothing to do with the closing. "We can't make a mountain out of a molehill," said Michael Donohoe, Pickering's environmental services director.

Mold has been the subject of much debate in Memphis as parents called for East High School's closing late last year due to mold concentrations, fearing their kids were in danger.

But environmental experts, including those from Pickering, said the fear was unnecessary, that only a small fraction of the population is allergic to mold.

East underwent a massive cleanup over the winter break, and the school district encouraged administrators at other schools to call with any mold-related concerns.
