Mold Found In Four Papillion La Vista Schools

Professional Cleaning Crews Disinfecting Rooms

PAPILLION, Neb. -- Officials with the Papillion La Vista School District announced Friday they've found mold in five classrooms at four different schools.

Portable classrooms at Rumsey Station Elementary, Tara Heights Elementary, Hickory Hills Elementary and Papillion Junior High School are affected.

Professional cleaning crews are tearing out carpet and just about everything else from inside the classrooms. Carpets will be replaced and the rest of the contents must be disinfected.

Officials found the mold after a student at Rumsey Station Elementary started developing allergy problems. A doctor suggested something at the school was the cause.

"We had a concern from a parent, so we did some testing. And then once the mold was discovered here, we tested all the portable classrooms throughout the school district and discovered the three other portables that needed to be closed," Papillion La Vista Schools official Annette Eyman said.

Cleaning crews worked at all four schools on Friday. Officials said another firm will return later to the same classrooms and inspect them.

"At this point right now, they have not found actual toxic mold. It's been the allergy mold. But there are still mold samples that are being tested," Eyman said.

Many parents and kids in the district were not aware until Friday about the mold problem.

The district plans to conduct more air quality tests inside the schools after the cleaning is complete. Until then they're sure the mold has been completely removed, students will be moved to temporary classrooms.
