SPRINGFIELD - Town school officials hope students can return to the Union
Street Elementary School on Monday, as environmental specialists believe
dust caused health-related problems in the building.
After a
thorough examination of the school, representatives from Environmental
Compliance Services of Brattleboro said the heating system used in the
school caused dirt to be raised into the air.
Springfield Superintendent Rose Rooth said officials hoped to reopen the
school on Monday after the building has been cleaned.
The school
was closed April 1 and 2 after health concerns were raised about whether
mold was growing in the school. Fire department officials then extended the
closing through this week.
A meeting
is planned for Friday between Springfield Fire Chief Ernest "Puggy" Lamphere
and school officials to determine if more must be done before the school can
reopen.
Rooth said
the problem was identified as a result of the noncentralized, passive
heating system in the school, built in 1951.
Each room
has its own heating system, where cold air is drawn in, heated, rises and
goes back into the room. The only way to bring in outside air is by opening
the windows, something not done during the winter.
Rooth said
ECS representatives believed dirt carried into the rooms by shoes was
getting into the air through the heating system.
A
professional cleaning company was at the school on Wednesday.
For the
rest of the week, Union Street students will be scattered around town.
